Herbert Homecoming 2012

Well this is now a week from the Herbert Homecoming so it is time to post some pictures and a little story or two.
Mostly the pictures are self explanatory but I want to make a couple of statements before I go on to the pictures.

Aunt Lil and Uncle Bill were there and the cousins attending were Blair Wainman and Clayton and Marg Wiebe. We looked for Klassen cousins and even Loewens but did not find any connections. There were people who were familiar with our Great Grandparents and Grandparents but even then there did not seem to be a lot of things they could tell us. We did not get to talk to Mr. Redekop who is the town historian but he was in the parade.
There were some surprises as we met friends of our friends who had been born there and grew up in Herbert or at least went to school there. They were Harders and Schultzs. Then an old friend of mine whom I worked with when I first was at the University turned out to be one of the entertainers on Saturday afternoon. He sings folksy stuff so that was a bonus.

There are a number of spelling errors in the signs and even in the brass plate Aunt Lil ordered for the memorial wall. The plaque for Great Grandpa Klassen was not up as far as we could see so it would be good to go back sometime to see.
So here are some pictures. Not necessarily in order or gathered together by subject. I am using Marg's pictures as well as my own.

 Welcome to Herbert Saskatchewan!
 From the Saturday morning parade.
Also from the parade. There were many more cars and trucks but I liked the colors here.

I would understand this to be a Great Uncle, our Grandfather's Brother-in-law. Anyone got the real answer?

The old train station turned into a great little prairie Museum.
Pointing us to good information about the history of Herbert and even about our family. And good food!
This is the memorial wall area which is very nicely done. The bricks in the background have brass plaques with family names and person names from the Herbert family.

Like I said the spelling is not the best in some cases.
Nothing but empty lots where these flourishing businesses once stood.

 This should say H.M. Klassen.
The area is not well kept which is the case around town since the buildings have grown old and yards abandoned.
We understood this to be the house where Great Grandpa and Grandma Klassen lived after donating their big house to the Town for a hospital. Things look pretty run down.

Aunt Lil said this was the lot where the Loewen house once stood. Very overgrown and of course not the house.
Looking north behind where the house would have stood. There really is a nice hill behind the yard.
Just a couple more pictures from the Memorial Wall area. Very pleasant area.
